Excerpt from Select Private Orations of Demosthenes, Vol. 1: Containing Contra Phormionem Lacritum, Pantaenetum, Boeotum De Nomine, Boeotum De Dote, Dionysodorum
WE have endeavoured in this edition to promote and facilitate the study of a most important and most interesting part of the writings of Demosthenes, the Private Oratz'o'ns. To this end we have selected twelve, which either fromothe nature of the subjects or from the manner of treatment or for both reasons appeared to afford the best and the most copious illustrations of the laws and general polity of Athens. It is remarkable that (with the exception of a small volume, long ago out of print, published by the late Mr Penrose) no such work as the present exists, even in Germany 1.

Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book explores the significance of private law and its importance in the lives of Athenian citizens in the fourth century BCE. With a focus on twelve cases, the author examines the legal and institutional frameworks through which economic and personal disputes were resolved in democratic Athens. Set against the rich historical and cultural backdrop of ancient Greece, the book offers detailed analysis of topics including contracts, marriage, inheritance, debt, property, and the role of arbitration. The author presents a wealth of evidence from inscriptions and legal documents, providing unique insights into the norms, values, and social practices of this era. The author's examination of these private lawsuits reveals the legal complexities and sophisticated legal system that existed in ancient Athens. These cases provide a nuanced understanding of daily life, the treatment of women and children, and the functioning of democracy in classical Greece. Through a close reading of the evidence, the book highlights the importance of understanding ancient law in its historical context and challenges simplistic notions of ancient Athenian society. Ultimately, the book offers a profound exploration of the centrality of private law in the fabric of Athenian life, making it an essential resource for scholars and students of ancient Greece.
