Sinopsis

A practical guide to building adaptive computational grids that respond to the problem at hand. This book explains a variational approach to generate multidimensional meshes that stay smooth and avoid tangling while concentrating points where they matter most.

Written for engineers and scientists, it shows how to apply mesh adaptation across one, two, and three dimensions. The text blends theory with numerical results, illustrating how an adaptive grid can improve accuracy without overwhelming computational cost.

  • How weight and smoothness functionals shape mesh distribution and guide adaptation

  • Techniques to prevent mesh tangling and to handle complex boundaries

  • Examples in two and three dimensions, including practical engineering scenarios

  • Considerations for implementation, performance comparisons, and future directions

Ideal for readers of computational fluid dynamics and numerical methods seeking a flexible, principled way to resolve challenging problems with adaptive grids.

Excerpt from A Variational Method for Generating Multidimensional Adaptive Grids

This paper discusses adaptive meshes that are generated by the use of variational principles. These adaptive meshes are used in conjunction with finite difference methods to continuously rezone calculations. The fixed number of mesh vertices are moved in a manner which enhances the numerical accuracy of these finite difference schemes when solving singular problems.

Adaptive 'meshes are the subject of a; rather large and varied research effort. However, a definition can be developed that encompasses most of the areas of research. An adaptive computation mesh is one that is generated in response to the structure of a problem so as to enhance the numerical accuracy of the associated differencing scheme. It is the method of generating the mesh that gives this area its diversity.

Several different methods of generating an adaptive mesh will be discussed. The methods can be categorized in many ways, but three categories are chosen here. They are fixed meshes, selectively refined meshes and moving meshes.
