Excerpt from Select Private Orations of Demosthenes, Vol. 2: Containing Pro Phormione, Contra Stephanum I. II.; Contra Nicostratum, Cononem, Calliclem; With Introduction and English Commentary
MY earliest interest in the Private Orations may be said to date from the time When it was my privilege as an undergraduate to attend, in the year 1865, a course of lectures by my friend Mr Moss, then Fellow and Lecturer of St J ohm's College, and novir Head Master of Shrewsbury School. His selections included two of the six speeches edited in the present volume.

Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book is a historical and literary study of the private orations of Demosthenes, the famous Athenian orator and politician of the 4th century B.C. The speeches were delivered in private lawsuits rather than political debates, and examine various issues of commerce and inheritance, along with topics like marriage and the treatment of slaves. The author provides an in-depth analysis of the speeches, their significance, and their persuasive techniques, as well as placing them within the context of Athenian legal and social history. The book presents a fine-grained examination of a particular set of important speeches, while also providing insight into the legal and social realities of ancient Athens. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
