Excerpt from Selections From Jean Richepin: Edited With Introduction, Notes, and Bibliography
To M. Richepin, whose acquiescence in the purpose of bringing some of the treasures of his works into accessible and educational form has so readily and repeatedly been given, and whose kindness has aided in the interpretation of certain points in this book, I beg to express my most grate ful appreciation of his authorization to prepare these selec tions from his so varied forms of literature.

This text follows a chronological order. A few ex cisions have been made and the softening Of a few expletives. The editor has also omitted the stanzas prefacing the Spanish stories - the couplets of petenera which the author has stitched as epigraphs to his tales, those coplas of which M. Richepin says that even amidst the words of them which will be transcribed for you, many will remain Obscure for you, unless some friendly picaro may consent to give you their argotic key. It is hoped that this text will help literary study by offering perfected examples of style, in precision, polish, superb coloring, and brilliancy.
