Excerpt from Comparison of Experiments on American and Foreign Building Stones, to Determine Their Relative Strength and Durability
Of all the purposes for which building materials are employed, that which requires the utmost attention to durability is the erec tion of national monuments. It is a mockery to the dead, and an Opprobrium to the living to put perishable materials into struc tures professing to perpetuate the virtue of great and good men. The Spanish nation is represented to have recently determined on the erection of a magnificent statue of bronze to rest on a base of rose granite, the most enduring of that species of rock, to commemorate the glory Of Columbus.

Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book compares the architectural strength and durability of various building materials from around the world. The author's experiments are set against the backdrop of historical and internationally significant edifices as well as rocks "kept down to a level with the ground" by the ceaseless forces of nature. The author seeks to understand the exact relationship between a material's composition and its ability to withstand weathering. The text also includes analysis of the findings of other researchers, including comparative testing on American and foreign stones. By proposing a possible law relating an object's strength to its dimensions, the author provides valuable insights for today's engineers and architects seeking durable and resilient construction materials. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
