Frontline diary from a young volunteer in 1915

A vivid, day-by-day account of training, transport, and trench life with the Queen Victoria’s Rifles. This memoir follows one man’s journey from England to the front lines in France and Belgium, capturing the texture of life in the trenches. The book blends personal voice with historical detail, revealing both routine duties and the harrowing moments of combat. It includes early experiences in training, shipboard passages, and moments of humor and fear as the author faces shellfire, gas, snipers, and the grind of daily life at war.

  • Close-ups of everyday hardships, from illness and dental troubles to the fear of shellfire
  • Accounts of major engagements and daily military routines in and around Ypres
  • Observations on morale, camaraderie, and the realities of trench warfare

Reseña del editor

Excerpt from Diary Kept by Rifleman B. C. Stubbs of the Second Draft Sent to the Queen Victoria Rifles in France

Stood by till 12 noon all ready to embark, and then told owing to submarines in Channel we could not get away. Hung about Southampton all afternoon and did a music hall in evening. Shall be glad to get a move on, although Southampton people are very kind.
