A few notes on the classification systems in use in the Harvard Library, and on their history, are necessary, in order to explain the character of the shelf-marks indexed in this Guide.

A. Down to 1877, the books of the Library were shelved in alcoves, each alcove devoted to a general subject, but no attempt at minute classification was made. The shelf-mark (e.g. Indicated the number of the alcove and the number of the shelf. The alcove numbers ran from 1 to 51, and many half-numbers were interpolated for alcoves which had been subdivided as the Library grew. (see pp. 15 Books which have not yet been reclassified still bear these numbers, and in calling for them, it is necessary to give the title of the book wanted, since the mark indicates only the shelf and not the individual book.
