Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book presents the official proceedings and debates of the convention held in Philadelphia in January 1838. The delegates gathered to amend the constitution of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, particularly regarding the issue of who should be eligible to vote. The convention addressed varying concerns, including the distribution of English and German language documents, the establishment of a uniform system for the distribution of legislative records, and the definition of the term "freeman" as it related to suffrage qualifications. The predominant topic of debate centered around the question of whether the right to vote should be extended to African American men. Many participants in the convention, including the author of the excerpt, argued against extending suffrage to African Americans. They believed that African Americans were not capable of self-government and that expanding voting rights to include them would lead to social disruption. The author of the excerpt also highlights the historical context of slavery in America and argues that England, not the United States, is responsible for the introduction of slavery in the American colonies. Ultimately, this book provides valuable insights into the complex and often contentious debates surrounding the issue of race and voting rights in the United States during the 19th century. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item. Nº de ref. del artículo: 9781333284244_0
