Excerpt from Logic, or the Science of Inference: A Systematic View of the Principles of Evidence, and the Methods of Inference in the Various Departments of Human Knowledge
Tun following pages comprise an attempt to systematise the various forms of inference engaged, either in the con struction of science, or in the generation of Opinion and belief. Notwithstanding the diversity of the subject, the author has endeavoured to meet its widest requirements; not neglecting, while he has devoted the greater portion of the treatise to the consideration of the laws and methods of inference in their simplest and most complex combina tions, to include in his design a. Description of the different subject-matter on which they are ordinarily employed, and the foundations on which their processes ultimately rest. If, to views so discursive, he has been able to impart any thing like systematic cdmpléteness, the merit is due not so much to him as to the excellent treatises which have already elaborated distinct portions of the subject and guided him through much of his labour.

Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book comprehensively examines inference, the mental process we engage in when formulating opinions, judgments, and beliefs. It does this through the lens of logic, a field concerned with the operations of the human faculty of reason, which the author considers the primary source of human distinction, supremacy, and societal rank. The author goes beyond the theoretical aspects of logic, and also provides a description of the different subject matters upon which logical processes and principles are typically employed, along with the foundations upon which these processes ultimately rest. This book systematically organizes all the processes of inference embodied in the various departments of knowledge, creating a valuable resource for anyone seeking to refine their reasoning skills. Its insights illuminate logic's indispensable role in the generation of scientific belief, and its significant function in strengthening and verifying the accuracy of our reasoning processes, regardless of the subject matter.
