Io che scrivo, ricordo di aver dovuto sostenere un vero assalto da parte di un illustre critico defunto che non volle, nè seppe perdonarmi uno slancio di sentimento raccolto in un centinaio di pagine e pubblicato per quella circostanza.

Il Verdi, come Rossini e Bellini, crea e non imita, produce novità e difficilmente ne accetta, ma la sua mu sica risponde sempre al gusto e alle aspirazioni del po polo in mezzo al quale egli vive e per il quale esso scrive.
