Greater and more eminent abilities, than any that now efpoufe infidelity. This was alfo the cafe in '7udea, when the/efl e/ the Sadducees prevailed. But perhaps jome may be ready to fay, that the great number of dei/lical boohs, which have been lately written in this country, and al/o imported/roan Em ope, has occa ion cd the great degeneracy of the prcfent age. But the truth is, it is the almo/t total depravity o/flntimcnt in matters 0/ religion, to which bad writers will be always ready to accommodate bltgnj'é'liffi, which has oecafloned tho/e infidclwrztings, w ic/i a7 efo cai'efizlly Ct} culated and/o eagerly read by tho/e who deny the Lord jefus Chm/l. And is it not high time for the friends of jefas to exert them/elves in hzsfei vice, and to employ every mean in their power, for the/upport of his re ligion. And is not this the time, when men of piety, and learning, and abilities, ought to employ their to lents, in the defence of that gofpel, upon which our everla/ling all depends. Many publications have ap pearcd in the prefent age, which feem to be very pro per/y calculated to an/wer this purptje. Some o/ the/e, however valuable in them/elves are but lllllc known. This is the cafe with the volume which is now ofiered to the public, and it is hoped that it will be peculiarly fee/enable at this time, when our modern dei/ls are /o exceedingly zealous in flipporting and propagating the unhappy cau/e they have the misfor tune to efhoufe. Ifthefe fermons are read with an unbiafled mind, Idoubi not but they will be read with great advantage, which will certainly be the mo L 973c tual way ofpraiflng and recommending them. The Almighty who is wonderful in counfel, and excellent in worhing, can bring good out of evil.
