Excerpt from The Acts of the Apostles: With Introduction, Notes and Maps
This little Commentary makes no pretension to be anything else than an aid to teachers of Bible classes and to private students of the Bible. The historical framework of such a book as the Acts of the Apostles sheds a great deal of light on many obscure passages relating to the social condition of the times, and I have called attention in the Introduction to the economic and political aspects of the times. The two most important critical questions suggested by the Acts - (i) The solution of the problem of the early Christian Church, how to reconcile the commandments of Moses with the new law of liberty taught by Jesus; (2) and the result of the discussion of this problem in the two parties within the Christian Church -belong more to the second part of the book, and will be discussed in the Introduction to chapters xiii. Xxviii. I have only to add that I have received many valuable suggestions from the Rev. A. O. Johnston, of Westbourne Free Church, Glasgow.
