This book delves into a pivotal chapter in Canadian history: the struggle for a unified British Empire. The author, a key player in the movement, provides a firsthand account of the efforts to maintain the integrity of the Empire in the face of challenges and divisions within Canada. Through a series of meetings, passionate discussions, and strategic actions, the author and his associates, known as the Canada First party, sought to foster a sense of national pride and loyalty to the Empire. Their endeavors extended to advocating for the acquisition of the vast Hudsons Bay Territory, which would greatly expand Canada's reach and reinforce its position as a dominant force within the Empire. This book offers a unique and insightful perspective on the complexities of nation-building and the dynamics of imperial politics in the 19th century.

Excerpt from The Struggle for Imperial Unity: Recollections and Experiences
Some fifteen years ago the late Dr. James Bain, Librarian of the Toronto Public Library, urged me to write my reminiscences. He knew that, as one of the founders of the Canada First party, as Chair man of the Organising Committee of the Imperial Federation League in Canada, then' President of it, and after its reorganisation, under the name of the British Empire League in Canada, still President, I had much private information, in Connection with the struggle for Imperial Unity, that would be of interest to the public. He was therefore continually urging me to put down my recollections in order that they should be preserved.
