Explore how early 19th-century France grew in land and people through authentic demographic tables that reveal the era’s big changes.
This nonfiction work compiles detailed statistical observations on population, territory, and distribution across French regions. It presents a clear narrative about how conquests expanded France’s size and how that growth affected population density and wealth. The conclusions drawn from the following Tables may, possibly, appear somewhat exaggerated; but as the materials of these conclusions are given in the greatest detail, and as no recent and positive enu meration can be opposed to them, itwould be absurd to attack established facts by bare conjectures. Domiciliary researches, and inquisitions of all kinds, have besides been so multiplied by the Revo lutien, and so much rigour and even cruelty have been employed in these repeated acts of despotism, that it is not reasonable to suppose, that any portion of what it so highly imported them to know, can have escaped the vigilance of the French Govern ment.

Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book is a comprehensive statistical analysis of the territorial organization of France. It was commissioned by Napoleon Bonaparte, who sought to bolster his authority by deploying his power apparatus in the most effective way. Written with impressive detail, this work provides an unparalleled insight into French society and administration of the time. It throws light on the population, nature of the land, and the depth of influence of French authority at the outset of the 19th Century. The authors believed that one could not efficiently govern such a large territory unless its conditions were known in detail. In this sense, the book epitomizes the spirit of the Aufklärung: the belief that detailed knowledge is the foundation for improving governance, and therefore, human life itself.
