The press. Should be firmly fastened down with screws. Oil thoroughly at working points before use, and weekly thereafter. Place near a window, if convenient, in good light.

The type. - In Opening packages lay them on a table and unroll carefully: let them stand upright on the paper and place something heavy along each side to keep them from falling. Carefully remove the string around the font. If the type is quite small or seems loose, saturate a sponge with water and let a few drops fall on every part of the faces, which will run between the letters, making them adhere together and stand up. (such wetting is often done to forms that must be moved about.) The letters of a kind generally will be found together; in separating them go through a row or line before commencing another. Arrange type in cases as Shown in diagram of case elsewhere. If any letters are missing, look over the case as similar appearing letters like b, d, p, q, and n, u, v, frequently become mixed by inexperienced hands. Two or more fonts may be put in one case if considerably different in Size so as to be readily distinguished.
