First stands the most universally inclusive litera ture, subdivided in the more important countries into periodicals and societies, sources and documents, and the collected writings, such as monographs, essays, lectures, etc., of several and individual authors. Upon this follows a grouping of gazetteers, dictionaries, and guidebooks, which leads to the systematic comprehensive treatises comprising both history and description, or works on the topography and geography of a given country.
