The progress early achieved by these societies has served naturally to stimulate efforts in the further development of their common in terests. In 1904, initial steps were taken which have Since resulted in the establishment Of the United Engineering Society, the purpose of which was to bring into a single organization representatives of the four societies already named, now commonly referred to as the Founder Societies, and out of the activities of the United Engi neering Society an organization for the encouragement of engineering research has appeared. This became possible through the presenta tion to the United Engineering Society of a sum Of money as a trust fund, the interest of which was to be used in the promotion of engi neering research. This resulted in the Engineering Foundation.
