Understanding how to plan and manage forests for long-term value
This classic work explains forest working plans as the practical tool for regulating sustained timber yields and guiding forest investments. It contrasts conservative management with more destructive approaches and shows how owners’ aims shape planning, finance, and forest care.
In clear, structured sections, the book introduces the idea of an ideal forest and the real-world limits of achieving it. It lays out key concepts like age-class gradation, normal growing stock, and normal increments, with examples drawn from both European and American practice. You’ll see how planning addresses protection, sylvicultural operations, and the balance between revenue and forest sustainability.

Excerpt from Forest Management: Forest Working Plans
Forests cannot be well developed where the development of the whole country is in arrears. Here the owner is compelled to adopt a policy of waiting - waiting for that general development of the country which is sure permanently to improve the value of stumpage. In such cases a working plan resolves itself into a plan for forest protection (against squatters, fires, etc.)
