Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book explores the critical state of roads in England and Scotland at the beginning of the 19th century. The author, drawing on his extensive experience as a road surveyor, argues that the poor condition of roads is not due to a lack of materials, but rather to a lack of scientific understanding in their application. He criticizes the haphazard, unscientific methods of road construction and repair that were prevalent at the time. The author's insights into road building were rooted in the broader intellectual movement of the Enlightenment, which emphasized the application of reason and scientific principles to solve practical problems. His work reflects a growing concern with efficiency and progress in the face of the challenges of a rapidly industrializing society. This book presents a detailed and practical blueprint for improving road construction and repair. The author outlines specific techniques for drainage, material selection, preparation, and application. He also stresses the importance of proper road sections and the detrimental effects of one-sided roads. The author's insights, grounded in both theory and practice, represent a significant contribution to the development of scientific road building. His work is a valuable record of the state of road engineering at the time, and offers a fascinating glimpse into the evolving relationship between science, technology, and society in the early 19th century.
