Excerpt from A Grammar of the Latin Language: For the Use of Schools and Colleges
The limits of a preface will allow us to notice but a few of the more prominent peculiarities of the following work.
To insure a correct and uniform pronunciation of the Latin language, our experience had satisfied us, that rules more cepi ous and exact than any new in use were greatly needed. In presenting the rules of orthoepy contained in this Grammar, it is not our object to introduce innovation, but to produce uni formity. This we have endeavored to effect by exhibiting, in as clear a light as possible, the principles of pronunciation adopted in the schools and universities of England, and in the principal colleges of this country. If these rules are regarded, the stu dent can seldom be at a loss respecting the pronunciation of any Latin word.
