The first XVII stanzas, descriptive of native scenery and individual feelings, are intended as an introduction to that sublimest of all acts of devotion - sublimest, because least influenced by any expectation of fame or hope of reward on earth. To a description of the scene of Abraham's dwelling-place succeeds his vision of future days, - and the author has attempted to epitomize the history of the Jews.
