Sinopsis

A provocative look at a famous 19th‑century medical inquest and the fight for justice. This account follows a medical professional's struggle to reveal the truth behind a death, challenging how coroner procedures were used and how public opinion influenced outcomes.

This edition frames the inquest and its fallout, offering a candid view of the people, procedures, and politics surrounding the case. It contrasts official conduct with the medical insights of those who sought a fair hearing, and it questions what justice should look like when authority and reputation are on the line.

  • Insights into how coroner inquests were conducted and challenged in the past

  • Direct quotes and reflections on fairness, evidence, and professional ethics

  • Recounted disputes among medical professionals and officials

  • Context for a controversial trial and its cultural impact

Ideal for readers of medical history, legal history, and Victorian-era controversies who want a window into the tensions between law, medicine, and public opinion.

Reseña del editor

Excerpt from Dr. Beaney's Vindication: With Reflections on the Inquest Held Upon the Body of Mary Lewis

Having been placed by a recent trial in the Supreme Court of this colony in an attitude of a peculiar and extremely painful nature before the world, without, as the issue demonstrates, one single excuse or justification for such treatment by those to whom I owe the infliction, it is but reasonable that I should have something to 0 say of a personal and general character. A gentleman, who is an accomplished member of the profession to which I belong, has done me the favour to furnish the public with a record of the investi gation conducted under the forms of law, and has given his analysis of the medical evidence elicited. He has also been by no means sparing in his strictures upon several of the gentlemen who were opposed to me. It is, however, not my intention to adopt a similar course. The voluminous details, though necessarily disjointed, are before the world, and will occupy a place amongst the many illus trations already existing connected with our medical jurisprudence. I propose to avoid, as far as possible, any direct reference to the medical phenomena, and to keep clear of those technical expressions which Usually crowd around such questions. It will be Obvious to every one that already too much by far has been paraded before the public gaze of matters which Should be strictly confined to the medical schools and literature. A most undue publicity has been given to physical conditions, and in SO crude a form as to demoralise rather than instruct the people, For this I hold myself free from blame. I deprecate Sincerely the baneful infliience which it must.
