Excerpt from Historical French Reader: With Notes, Exercises And Vocabulary
A glance at the lists of books generally used in this country in the study of French gives the impression that, as a rule, chiefly novels and plays are read in the class room. Some of the greatest writers of France, although they are recognized masters of the French language, seem to be almost neglected, because they devoted their energies and their genius to the writing of works of a more serious character.
French historians, for instance, are little read. Still, it is quite easy to find in their works many stories that are unsurpassed in fiction and present at the same time perfect models of the narrative style.
This book offers a selection of such stories as are to be found in Froissart, Fenelon, Michelet, Rousseau, Voltaire, Taine, etc. An abridgment has also been given of that most famous epic poem, La Chanson de Roland. An effort has been made to preserve as much as possible of the text of the original but it has been found necessary, especially in the first half of the book, to shorten the text, to rewrite it in modern French in the case of La Chanson de Roland and Froissart, for instance, in order to make it easier and progressive, and thus bring it within the compass of an elementary reader.
Each selection is a complete story or anecdote preceded, whenever necessary, by a short historical introduction.
It has been found necessary in such a text-book to add historical notes which will enable the students to understand the different epochs to which the selections refer. Besides, such notes on points of grammar will be found as are required by readers yet in the first stage of their study of French. A map of France has also been added as well as a chronological list of the rulers of France.
