Strothmann, Zaitliten,sprucht, abgesehen von dem Nordrand am Persischen Golf, dem Sand schäq al Ahsa', das aber administrativ zum babylonischen Wilajet Basra gehört, nur die Westküste türkisch zu nennen. Ihre größere nördliche Hälfte, das Wiläjet Higäz, hofft das Sultanat durch die im Bau begriffene Mekkabahn enger an sich zu ketten. Stets aber wird, wenigstens für Mekka selbst, auf den Sarifen, den einheimischen Fürsten aus der Nachkommenschaft des Propheten, Rücksicht zu nehmen sein Die kleinere südliche Hälfte, etwa in der Ausdehnung der gegenuberliegenden italienischen Kolonie Eritrea, umfaßt das Wilajet _]emen. Hier herrscht seit langem Kriegszustand, der selbst jetzt, wo durch den Krieg mit einer europäischen Macht eine sammelnde Regierungsparole gewonnen ist, nicht völlig behoben erscheint. Zwei Namen von Aufständischen drangen in den letzten Jahren häufiger zu uns. Es sind die Benü 'asir unter dem Saih Idris und die Zaiditen unter dem Imäm jahjä. Das Bergland von 'asir an der Grenze nach dem Higaz hat sich schon einmal in der neueren Geschichte einen Namen gemacht. Dort versagte die Kriegskunst des bekannten Statt halters von Egypten, Muhammad 'ali'. Nach mehr als zehnjährigem Kampfe ließ er i. 1837 den Versuch zur Unterwerfung aufgeben, kurz bevor i. 1839 'aden von den Engländern besetzt wurde, die neuestens i. 1905 durch eine förmliche Grenzregulierung das Gebiet von 'aden bis nord-'omän, also _süd - Hadramaut, ihrer Interessen sphäre zuschreiben ließen, während Perim im Roten Meer und die bahrain-inseln vor al Ahsa bereits länger in ihrem Besitz sind. Un gefahr auf der Mitte zwischen 'aden und 'asir liegt in einer Ent fernung von etwa 180 km vom Hafenort Hodaida in über 2200m Meereshöhe der Hauptplatz von _]emen San'ä'. Es zählt nach freilich nicht gesicherter Schätzung gegen 40 000 Einwohner. Hier ist der Sitz des Imäm der Zaiditen.
