La systématique, évoluant avec les progrès de la science, reflète toutes les idées suggérées par les découvertes de chaque jour; mais elle atténue ce que ces idées ont d'excessif ou de prématuré, parce qu'elle les ordonne dans des cadres relativement fixes, quoique sans cesse remaniés par les idées nouvelles qui vieilliront à leur tour.
En cherchant à saisir la systématique des Champignons dans la position qu'elle occupe actuellement au cours de ses fluctuations, nous avons pensé que c'était le moyen le plus simple de synthétiser les principaux résultats et les principales tendances de la mycologie et d'écrire une introduction aux études spéciales qui paraîtront ultérieurement dans les Progressus rei botanicae sur divers problèmes soulevés ou éclairés par l'étude des Champignons.
Il ne faut pas chercher dans cette étude un répertoire des innombrables travaux consacrés à la mycologie. Ce serait faire double emploi avec les Jahresberieht qui en mentionnent un millier chaque année et avec le Botanisches Centralblatt publié par l'Association internationale des Botanistes. Il faut moins encore y voir un choix des travaux les plus considérables ou les plus parfaits. Il ne nous appartient pas de faire un tel classement; d'ailleurs il n'existe guère d'œuvre absolument dénuée d'intérêt ni d'œuvre à l'abri de toute critique. Nos indications bibliographiques, sommaires et incomplètes, sont de simples points de repère. Parmi les savants qui ne sont point nommés ici, il est des maîtres bien connus de tous les mycologues et dont les œuvres seront mises en relief dans des Résumés d'ordre moins général et moins impersonnel.
