[Eine gutgekleidete Frau in Trauer liegt bei einem blumengeschmückten Grabe auf den Knien und murmelt Gebete.]
[Jeanne geht auf und ab, als erwarte sie jemand.]
[Marion spielt mit welken Blumen, die sie von einem Kehrichthaufen auf dem Wege nimmt.]
[Der Abbé geht hinten in der Allee und liest sein Brevier.]
Der Wächter [kommt; zu Jeanne]. Hören Sie, hier ist kein Spielplatz.
Jeanne [ergeben]. Ich warte hier nur auf jemand, der bald hier sein muß...
Der Wächter. Das ist möglich, aber man darf keine Blumen nehmen...
Jeanne [zu Marion]. Leg die Blumen fort, mein Kind!
