This book is a detailed, beginner-friendly look at the fundamentals of how the physical world works. The author assumes no prior scientific knowledge from his readers, and takes great pains to explain the foundational principles of chemistry, physics, and biology in a clear, accessible style. The author's approach to the material is historical, tracing the development of scientific concepts and tools over time. The historical nature of the book is a major strength, as it not only provides a solid grounding in present-day scientific disciplines, but also shows the reader how today's scientific principles arose out of the work of earlier scientists. The author also provides a thorough examination of the scientific method, giving readers the tools they need to form, test, and revise their own scientific hypotheses. This book is an excellent resource for teachers of beginning physical science.

Part of the exercises of this manual have been gathered from existing sources; all have been simplified for the use of first-year students. The writer found many helpful suggestions for the exercises on Soils in a pamphlet entitled Some Principles of Agriculture, presumably published by the Connecticut State Board of Education.
