Excerpt from Rational Method, Following Nature Step by Step, to Learn How to Read, Hear, Speak, and Write French, Vol. 1
While learning its native tongue, a child passes from audition to reading; the spoken language, the direct sign of its thoughts, gives it the key to writ ten language. In like manner, but reversing the order of acquiring knowledge, he who learns an idiom in books, and becomes familiarized with the written form, will only require frequent audition of the written text, which he already understands, to become familiar with pronunciation. This progress in the comprehension of the spoken language will increase in proportion to his knowledge of the writ ten idiom.

The author, a pioneer in the field of language education, argues that traditional grammar-based language instruction is ineffective and advocates instead for a method that emphasizes listening and speaking before reading and writing. This method, which has been successfully applied to foreign languages for decades, finally has a systematic and accessible introduction that will be of interest to educators, learners, and anyone who is curious to know more about this approach to language acquisition.
