Denn der Grundgedanke unseres Versuches ist, zu zeigen, wie diese moderne Ästhetik, die vom Begriffe der Einfühlung ausgeht, für weite Gebiete der Kunst geschichte nicht anwendbar. Ist. Sie hat ihren archime dischen Punkt vielmehr nur auf eine m Pol menschlichen Kunstempfindens. Zu einem umfassenden ästhetischen System wird sie sich erst dann gestalten, wenn sie sich mit den Linien, die vom entgegengesetzten Pol her kommen, vereinigt hat.

Excerpt from Abstraktion und Einfühlung: Ein Beitrag zur Stilpsychologie
Der vorliegende Versuch ist schon vor zwei Jahren entstanden und zwar als Dissertation. Inzwischen bin ich natürlich manchen Einzelheiten der Beweisführung entwachsen und würde ihnen heute ein strenger Rezensent sein. Die Grundideen des Buches haben sich aber im Laufe der geistigen Entwicklung bei mir nur verstärkt und ich hoffe ihnen in weiteren Arbeiten eine immer bessere und reifere Fundamentierung geben zu können.
Die Schrift hat beim Vertrieb im Kreise künstlerisch und kulturell interessierter Menschen eine starke Anerkennung gefunden, die sich meist mit der dringenden Aufforderung verband, ich möchte die Arbeit weiteren Kreisen zugänglich machen, da ihre Probleme im tieferen Sinne aktuell seien. Erst heute komme ich mit Unterdrückung aller selbstkritischen Bedenken dieser Aufforderung nach. Denn die lebhafte Aufmerksamkeit, die die hier formulierten Thesen erregten, über zeugte mich, dass es angebracht sei, sie zur allgemeinen Diskussion zu stellen. Von dieser Diskussion er hoffe ich für mich und andere manche Anregung und manche Belehrung. Sie wird gewiss zum Läuterungsprozess, den diese so bedeutungsvollen Probleme durchmachen müssen, vieles beitragen.
Diesen vorläufigen Versuch widme ich in dankbarer und freundschaftlicher Gesinnung Herrn Prof. Dr. A. Weese-Bern, dessen immer willigem Verständnis ich so manche Förderung und Aufmunterung meiner Arbeit verdanke.
