Sinopsis

Master the essentials of numbers and calculation with a clear, practical guide. This edition of Complete Arithmetic presents the fundamentals of notation, numeration, and basic operations in a steady, student-friendly sequence. It blends theory with guided practice to help learners read, write, and work with numbers confidently.

The text begins with a solid grounding in Arabic and Roman numeration, explains place value, and trains readers to read large numbers aloud. It then moves through essential arithmetic processes, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, with attention to fractions, decimals, and practical applications. The material is designed to build skills step by step, reinforcing concepts through examples and exercises.

Topics are organized to support gradual mastery, from listening to notation rules to applying methods in real-world problems. The material also introduces percentage, interest, and basic financial calculations to connect math with everyday decisions.

  • Clear explanations of number systems and place value.

  • Guided practice on reading, writing, and comparing numbers.

  • Foundations of arithmetic operations, fractions, decimals, and percentages.

  • Real-world problems to build confidence in practical math skills.

Excerpt from Complete Arithmetic

A complete arithmetic should meet all the ordinary demands of the elementary school. It may omit that which is non-essential and all matter that properly belongs to textbooks for secondary schools; but it should include a full treatment of all important topics taught in the elementary school, and a limited treatment of those of minor importance.

This book is intended for a complete arithmetic, to be used either with or without the authors Elementary Arithmetic. The work is divided into three parts. Part One, after giving a complete treatment of the fundamental operations, covers the work ordinarily found in the-sixth year. Part One, after reviewing the subjects of Bills and Accounts, Denominate Numbers, and Practical Measurements, covers the work of the seventh year. Part Three covers the work of the eighth year.

The aim of this book is threefold:

(1) To give the pupil skill in the art of computation.

(2) To make him a good mathematician.

(3) To give him a working knowledge of modern business methods.

The first necessarily suggests an abundance of graded work.

The second requires both inductive and deductive thought.

The method, therefore, is inductive in the development of all mathematical principles, and deductive in their application.
