Sinopsis

Excerpt from Short Studies in Nature Knowledge: An Introduction to the Science of Physiography

The growth of our knowledge of the physical condi tion of the earth has been a long and laborious process, the work of many men in many lands. The astronomer, by nightly watch and elaborate computation, has shown the great globe we inhabit to be but one of a group of worlds circling round the sun as the foundation; the exploring traveller has made known the most distant parts of the earth; and the navigator has steered a bold course across the seas. Land and water have so yielded their secrets that the world's map is now almost complete. The geologist has penetrated below the surface to read the records of the rocks, and has brought to light evidence of worlds preceding the present one, each with special forms of animal and vegetable life, and a changed configuration of surface, whilst the physicist has experimented upon its mass, its atmospheric cloak, and upon the natural forces that govern it, until the great physical facts of our earthly home are largely revealed.

In these chapters upon Nature Knowledge the author, a teacher of the Education Department, and of the Science and Art Department, has expanded notes of class-lessons given during the past quarter of a century, and has included some of the results of recent travel and research.

The book, whilst introducing the general public to some acquaintance with phases of the natural world, should also serve as a reader and companion to the text-books used in the upper forms of schools, assist University Extension students, aid Kindergarten teachers in preparing for the Froebel Union certificate, and, generally, give an idea of the extended treatment adopted by the great geographers, as Reclus, Mrs. Somerville, Ansted, MalteBrun, and Carl Ritter.
