Data for this study were gathered from two projects involving the introduction of new production machines into factory contexts. This book examines the nature of adaptive learning processes in organizations and elucidates the role of situated learning and how it affects organizational learning. The author analyzes the process of problem-solving around new manufacturing equipment, highlighting the iterative process of investigation and adaptation that occurs between different organizational settings: the physical plant and the lab. The author finds that adaptation is a situated process, in that: 1. Different organizational settings (1) contain different kinds of clues about the underlying issues, (2) expose learners to different ideas, and (3) offer different resources for generating and analyzing information. Consequently, actors frequently must move in an iterative fashion between different organizational settings before identifying the causal underpinnings of a problem and selecting suitable solutions. The author concludes that theories of adaptive learning should also take into account how actors (both collectively and individually) use their surroundings to understand events, and how these surroundings affect the social interactions that unfold. This book adds a new dimension to the literature on adaptive learning processes, which currently focuses almost exclusively on social knowledge exchange (via discussion, argument, and collaborative sensemaking).
