Excerpt from The Making of Leather

The present book must in no sense be taken as a manual of the art of leather manufacture, and for many reasons working details have been purposely avoided except where they seemed necessary to the understanding of principles. Those who are concerned in actual manufacture will of course consult the larger works mentioned in the bibliography on p. 148; but there are probably readers who will be satisfied with a sketch of the methods and some discussion of the scientific basis of a very ancient and important industry which, nevertheless, involves in its explanation some of the most difficult branches of modern knowledge; and which, from this cause, has lagged behind most others in its scientific development.
