Sinopsis

Excerpt from Notes on Permanent-Way Material, Platelaying and Points and Crossings

A few tables follow. Those which specially apply to the old and new standard crossings in use on Indian State Railways were worked out by me when I was Assistant Superintendent Way and Works, north-western Railway, and, prefaced by a few simple rules, were circulated among all engineers and inspectors on that line. I wish to say, however, that my object has been, not so much to put ready-made figures at the disposal of the reader, as to indicate the simplest way of working out for himself any problem which may occur.

I regret that I cannot even attempt to give a list of the books which I have consulted, and from which, as I readily acknowledge, I have derived a great deal, either absolutely or in confirmation of my own experience. Engineers in India can only carry about with them a few standard books of reference them are no libraries of professional works within easy reach and all that we can do is to lend and borrow such few books as we have.

This little book has been written at scattered intervals of leisure, but I can only plead this as a partial excuse for its unequal treatment of the subject and lack of completeness.

Excerpt from Notes on Permanent-Way Material, Platelaying and Points and Crossings

The permanent-way inspector of to-day so far as my knowledge of him goes is not merely that vague product, a "practical man;" he does not necessarily prefer guesswork to certainty; he has not a supreme contempt for a simple and intelligible mathematical method; he has not a serene confidence in the fallible process of "putting it in by the eye;" and he is not one jot less practical than the platelayer of the old school, although he has had the advantage of a better education. To him, then, I dedicate this little book.

The first chapter deals with the material which the platelayer has to work with. While on furlough in 1885 I was engaged for some months in passing material for the War Office, and so had constant opportunity of observing the processes of manufacture which I have briefly described. The inspection and test reports, I may add, are quotations from my own papers.

In the second chapter I have described the actual operations of platelaying, both as regards construction and maintenance; and for assistance in this portion I am greatly indebted to Inspector Campion and several other friends, both Engineers and Platelayers.

The third chapter treats of points and crossings. Upon this subject Donaldson is, without question, the great authority. But simplifications of his treatment follow at once from the measurement of the gauge from inside edge to inside edge of rail-head, instead of from centre to centre of rail, since the width of the upper table of the rail disappears from all terms of the calculation, and only affects the clearance.
