Excerpt from Plant Succession: An Analysis of the Development of Vegetation
Development and Structure of Vegetation (1904) and Research Methods in Ecology in which an endeavor to organize the Whole field of present-day succession was made for the first time. The studies of the past decade have confirmed and broadened the original concepts, and have led irresistibly to the conclusion that they are of universal application. The summer of 1913 and the spring and sum mer of 1914 were spent in testing both principles and processes through out the vegetation of the western half of the continent. The area scrutinized extends from the Great Plains to the Pacific Coast and from the Canadian Rockies to the Mexican boundary. The great climax formations of this region were traversed repeatedly, and their development and relations subjected to critical analysis and comparison.

Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book takes a unique approach to understanding the development of plant communities, arguing that plant formations should be viewed as complex organisms with distinct life cycles. The author meticulously analyzes the processes that drive the transformation of barren landscapes into thriving ecosystems, tracing the movement of plant populations over time. This exploration delves into the forces that initiate change, such as erosion, deposition, and the actions of animals, and examines the intricate interactions between plant life and its environment. Drawing inspiration from earlier work on peat bogs and forest succession, the author delves into the concept of ââ Å"sere,ââ  a unit of succession comprising the complete development of a plant formation, from its initial stages to its climax. The book's analysis goes beyond the immediate causes of change, exploring the role of climate as a fundamental driver in shaping the trajectory of plant communities. By emphasizing the developmental nature of vegetation, the author provides a framework for understanding not only how ecosystems evolve in the present but also how they have evolved across geological time.
