IN the following pages I have endeavoured to give a plain and concise description of the main systems in use in practical telegraphy. The latter limiting condition naturally rules out many ingenious plans and much delicate apparatus, which, though of great merit and giving, in some cases, very high speeds, have not succeeded in proving their adaptability to working conditions.
