Excerpt from Men and Rails
That is my reason for writing this book: a desire to state the case for a more rational treatment of railway problems in the hope that it will lead to a more humane treatment of railwaymen. I have no intention of even attempting to produce a handbook dealing with all the complex issues and confusing statistics of railway finance - there are already numerous excellent treatises on the various material phases of the subject - my first, and last, concern is with the hundreds of thousands of human beings whose lives are bound up in the ruder and more solemn facts of the railway industry.

Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book, a historical analysis of the British railway system, traces its origins from conception to nationalization. It delves into the rampant corruption, profiteering, and abject disregard for human life that hampered its early development. The author painstakingly details the fierce opposition faced by the pioneers of rail travel, with vested interests and the aristocracy conspiring to protect their financial and social privileges. Despite these obstacles, the railway industry eventually flourished, but its dark underbelly remained. The book exposes the inhumane working conditions, excessive hours, paltry wages, and lack of basic safety measures endured by railway workers for decades. It meticulously documents the tireless efforts of unions to secure fair treatment for these essential workers, leading to hard-fought victories for better pay and working conditions. This powerful and meticulously researched account humanizes the struggle for workers' rights, revealing the sacrifices made by those who toiled to build and maintain the nation's railways.
