Excerpt from Complex System: Using Complex Objects for Controlling the Future
Traditionally, databases store, manipulate and retrieve information about the present and the past. We are interested in the future in this paper. Specifically, we want to control the future (make judicious decisions to reach certain objectives) and infer certain facts about it, i.e. Ask futuristic queries. Both of these questions are of importance; however, because of the space limitation, we will concentrate on control in this paper. Inference issues will be addressed elsewhere.
The future of a system can be understood only if one knows the current state of the system and the laws, governing the changes of the system, known as causality laws In other words, it is necessary to represent the state of the system and describe dynamic laws, controlling its change. We define a complex system as a pair, the first component describing the state of the system and the second the laws determining its futuristic behavior.

Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book introduces a conceptual framework for modeling and simulating the future behavior of complex systems. The author draws inspiration from fields such as physics, AI, operational research, and information systems design methodologies. The book defines complex systems as a pair consisting of (1) a complex object (a structured and interrelated data describing the system) and (2) a set of transformation rules (specifying dynamic laws controlling system change). The author presents a simulation algorithm, called the simulation engine, that enables users to run simulations and understand the future behavior of complex systems. The book also discusses how to make the best choices among non-deterministic alternatives in these rules by establishing objectives and transforming these goals into additional constraints. The author concludes by discussing the significance of the book's insights into the modeling and simulation of complex systems, particularly for advanced applications such as engineering, industrial, and organizational systems.
