Sinopsis

Five lectures on currency and banking illuminate how money, credit, and bills of exchange shape an economy. This edition presents the ideas in a clear, accessible way, helping readers understand why monetary systems work the way they do.

Based on a historical set of lectures delivered in Queen's College, Cork, the book explores how different forms of money interact with credit, trade, and government policy. It examines the role of bills of exchange, the limits of metallic currency, and the benefits of a well-regulated currency system. Throughout, it ties theory to practical outcomes in commerce and public finance.

What you’ll experience:

  • Plain explanations of how bills of exchange function in everyday payments.

  • Discussion of the pros and cons of metallic versus mixed currency systems.

  • Insights into how currency regulation affects credit, prices, and banking.

  • Historical context that shows currency issues in action during famine and political events.

Ideal for readers of economic history, monetary policy, and anyone curious about how money keeps a country’s markets moving.

Reseña del editor

Excerpt from The Principles of Currency and Banking: Being Five Lectures Delivered in Queen's College, Cork, to the Students in Arts of the Third Year

IN the present edition of these Lectures I have cor rected some inaccuracies which occurred in the first. I have in many places, where my meaning seemed to be Obscure, endeavoured to make it plain and I have, in some instances, altered the arrangement of the subjects. I believe that they are thus better worthy of acceptance than they originally were, and that they are now probably as complete as I shall be able to make them until experience shall have thrown some more light upon the subject.
