Excerpt from Portland Prairie in Present Times: Including Some Thirty Descriptive Farm Sketches and Family Records
In 1911 the publisher of this pamphlet issued a booklet of 120 pages entitled "Old Times on Portland Prairie." Most of the month of December of the previous year was spent in the community and this enabled us to gather quite a fund of information concerning settlement and later times, though much of the work was derived from memory owing to a long residence there, beginning with the year 1864. In a general sense the present work supplements the earlier one. Having again spent most of what chanced to be a mild winter, and the early spring, in the community, it may be said that the fact has rendered this work possible.
It has often been the case that an author will make some use of his preface in pointing out what he considers to be the defects of his work. Parts of this work were written out before leaving the community, but not very closely followed when the copy came to be put in type, since we are accustomed to put whole pages in type without using any written copy except looking over some notes for reference - provided the pans being set pare not actually quoted matter. Now the farm sketches were not written out before our return, has remained in note-book form. Hence certain details, largely of a personal nature, will occasionally be found lacking in some sketches hut present in others. Had the sketches also been put in writing the absence of thee details might have been noticed and in some measure supplied. But, on the whole, the present work will be found to contain a large fund on information concerning Portland Prairie farms, so far as the sketchs go, and beyond what is usual in a county history.
