It therefore seems eminently proper and even necessary to preface a work of this character with a brief discussion regarding the elements of support. A description Of the elemental units of support, such as pillars, props, cribs, stulls and square sets will not therefore be out Of place in this connection. Further, the use Of filling is considered, as it is rapidly becoming an important factor in the support Of under ground excavations; caving as a factor in support is also discussed.
