The desire to make possible more effective and more satisfactory work in composition has prompted the making of this little book. The text of both stories is given, together with a few details of the Franco-German War, a map, and a plan of that part of Paris to which allusions are made. Without the necessary background appreciative study is impossible, and no matter how well the teacher sketches in this background, the pupils do not long retain any clear, accurate knowledge of it. They must be given some definite facts which may be learned and to which they may refer. The details of the war are in French for the use of pupils where French is the language of the classroom. For the same reason the necessary explanations of proper names have been given in French in the vocabulary. If English is used in the classroom, the pupils have but to translate, since all words may be found in the vocabulary. There are many exercises and much intentional repetition, as the little book has been planned for second-year work, that is, Sophomore work in the high school having a French course of four years, five times a week. Should the course be longer or shorter than four years, the teacher will decide when the work may be effectively begun.
