Excerpt from The Child's Book of Common Things: For the Use of Primary Schools
It is to be hoped that the teacher will not confine herself to the limits Of this book, but that she will introduce other subjects into her general exercises. There are many other common things besides those that I have here presented, which may be rendered very interesting and profitable in the instruction of her pupils.

Excerpt from The Child's Book of Common Things: For the Use of Primary Schools
This book has been made in order to meet a want in primary schools which I have observed in performing my duties as a school visitor. The chief defect in primary instruction, as it is commonly pursued, is the failure to teach children to think. Everything is learned almost entirely by rote. The learning of words and things without understanding them, predominates largely at the very outset of education; and a bad habit is formed which adheres to the pupil in his after course, hindering continually his progress. The result is, that though children are busy observers and thinkers when they begin, ever ready to ask the reasons of things, they lose, in a great measure, this disposition to observe and think, in the treadmill drudgery of a rote education. Hence the fact, that a child is very often a better observer at six or eight years of age than he is at ten or twelve. His spirit of inquiry has been repressed rather than encouraged, and he has gradually given up his questioning of parents and teachers, so commonly fruitless, and with it his observation of things around him.
Some parents and teachers have endeavored to go counter to this prevalent tendency. But they have found great difficulty in doing this, from two causes. First, the books used in primary education are so constructed as to encourage, we may say almost prescribe, learning by rote. Ordinarily they are in the catechetical style, and the answers to the questions are generally so expressed that the child gets no intelligent idea of what is intended to be communicated, and they are therefore merely committed to memory as so many words.
