Excerpt from Methods in Written Arithmetic
It has long been the conviction of the writer of the following pages that the subject of arithmetic, as it is too often studied, yields a smaller return for the time devoted to it, than any other branch included in the curriculum of our common schools. Pupils begin the study of numbers at the threshold of their school life and continue it for from six to ten years; yet a large proportion of them have but little appreciation of the principles of the science, and their work is, consequently, almost entirely mechanical.
