Poisoning by the use of water from them, and the purer the water the greater is the danger. Spring waters, which generally contain varying percentages of carbonates, sulphates, and other salts, do not corrode lead as pure water does. Excerpt from Notes on Lead Ores: Their Distribution and Properties

It very frequently happens, and more particularly in country towns, that the local gasfitter, decorator, or, in fact, handy-man tradesman, is called on, at a spring cleaning or redecorating of a house, to undertake the work of renovating the brass fittings - gas fixtures, lamps, door plates and handles, curtain rods, and so forth - which, owing to lack of knowledge and materials, though he may possess the time, he is compelled either to refuse, or to send to a leading manufacturing centre, such as London or Birmingham.
