Excerpt from Butler's Record
For the sixth time Benjamin F. Butler presents himself to the people of Massachusetts as a candidate for the office of Governor. He twice wooed the Commonwealth as the candidate of the Democrats; twice, in 1871 and 1873, he eagerly sought in vaia the nomination of Republican State Conventions; and now he asks the suffrages of the voters, for the second time, as an independent and self-nominated aspirant. So persistent and personal a pursuit of the office, after he has been decisively rejected under whatever political banner he has fought, and after failing to obtain it, even though in order to do so he has deserted in turn every party to which he has attached himself, and falsified, by his acts, the professions to which he has pledged himself, makes necessary a searching inquiry into his career as a public man.
It is for the interest of every voter in the Commonwealth that this incorrigible candidate should be known for what he is, and not for what he claims to be.
His public career extends over a period of more than a quarter of a century. During that period he has constantly kept himself in the eye of the people. He has occupied seats in the State Legislature and in Congress, and has held important military commands. He has been heard on every public question that has agitated the State or the country. In examining his claim to an office which he has so doggedly sought, therefore, it is right that he should be tried by his record.
