Excerpt from Problems of Fertilization
The following discussion of the problems of fertili zation is an outgrowth of the writer's own studies in this field. It is an attempt to present the actual status of the various problems in a critical but not in an exhaustive manner, and is thus to be regarded as a point of departure for future work as much as a brief summary of attained results. The necessary limits of the volume have imposed restrictions which have permitted scant justice to numerous excellent pieces of work with which all special students are familiar; for this the absence of textbook intention and style may perhaps be addi tional excuse. The part of the subject that deals with the basis of biparental inheritance is purposely treated more summarily than other problems, because so much that is really extraneous to the problem of ferti lization proper is involved in the discussion.

Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the fascinating world of fertilization, exploring the union of two cells ââ â the gametes ââ â to form a single, new cell, the zygote. This process, central to the reproduction of all sexually reproducing organisms, is examined through a lens of both historical and scientific inquiry. The author traces the evolution of understanding surrounding fertilization, from the ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle to the groundbreaking discoveries of the nineteenth century. The book explores the complex interplay of internal and external factors that influence fertilization, including the maturity of the germ cells, the irreversibility of the reaction, and the critical role of specicity. By examining the historical progression of ideas surrounding this process, this book reveals how our understanding of life, and the intricate mechanisms of inheritance, has expanded over time. It underscores the enduring mystery of fertilization as a force that binds together generations and perpetuates the cycle of life.
