Excerpt from Computing Jetons
Professor Barnard, however, approached the subject primarily from the standpoint Of a numismatist, a field in which he is an acknowledged expert, as witness the honor that has recently come to him in his ap pointment as curator Of coins and medals in the Ashmolean Museum at Oxford, and so it has seemed to me that I might make at least a slight contribution by approach ing it from the standpoint Of a student of the history of mathematics. It would, in that case, be natural to consider primarily the need for, the use of, and the historical development of the jeton in performing mathematical calculations, and this is the pleasant task that I have set for myself in preparing this monograph.

Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book explores the history of computing jetons, small tokens used for numerical calculations in the absence of convenient numerical systems. It begins with the ancient abacus and traces its evolution through various forms, including the line abacus that dominated practical calculation for centuries. The book also discusses the methods employed with jetons, the steps that slowly led to the modern calculating machine, and the prospects of developing simpler and less expensive devices that will render nearly all computation mechanical. The author endeavors to create an engaging overview of the human needs that the abacus, in its various forms, tended to satisfy. The text also delves into the possibility that ingenuity will, as stated above, devise a more efficient machine at a low cost so that human energy may be still further conserved through mechanical calculation. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item. Nº de ref. del artículo: 9781331933113_0
