Sinopsis

Excerpt from Thoughts on Moderate Reform in the House of Commons

There is a Census of the Population taken by authority of Parliament every ten years grounding myself, therefore, on this authentic return, I would enact, that whenever it appears by the Census that the population of a town exceeds Seventy Thousand, to that town a writ should issue, to return Representatives to Parliament.

To the Noble Lord who has thus taken the lead as the Champion of Constitutional and Moderate Reform, the country is already singularly indebted, for it is to his exertions we owe the memorable repeal of the Corporation and Test Acts, which first opened the eyes of the Ministry to the possibility of Catholic Emancipation; and when he shall succeed in his present object, as I doubt not but eventually he will do, he will add another leaf to the Civic Crown which the applause of his countrymen has already bound around his brows.

The proposal has been, however, for the present, rejected - by a small majority.

Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book argues for moderate electoral reform in England, advocating for the extension of voting rights to the industrial metropolises of the time, which had been left unrepresented in Parliament despite significant population growth. The author, writing in 1831, situates this push for reform within a broader historical context, highlighting a gradual movement towards greater representation and democratic principles in the country's governance. The book delves into specific proposals for reform, such as establishing a threshold for population size that would automatically grant a town the right to elect representatives, as well as measures to reduce the costs and logistical challenges associated with county elections. The author also grapples with objections to these reforms, including concerns about maintaining the influence of landed gentry and the potential for increased electoral fraud. Ultimately, this book makes a compelling case for electoral reform, arguing that it is both necessary to ensure fair representation for all citizens and essential for the continued health and vitality of British democracy. Its insights remain relevant today, as societies continue to grapple with the challenges of ensuring that their political systems are responsive to the needs and aspirations of the people they represent. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item. Nº de ref. del artículo: 9781331925125_0
