Kierkegaard is of special interest to us as a type who contained within himself the power to ascend to the utmost peaks of individuality - and not only to ascend towards an outer individuality - but to hold within the flowering rod and the cold spire of the Master Builder distance of religious individuality. Kierkegaard came before the dawn of analytical consciousness. In those days the power of the Father had not yet been brought down to earth or realised on earth - thin cold feet could endlessly run and too long arms be stretched to their fingertips beseeching to be called to the warmth of the radiant God. Such was the heroic phase of early nineteenth-century schizoid thought; through loneliness alone could nearness to the Father be achieved.
